Magnesium and Depression
Several studies have shown a significant correlation between low magnesium levels and depressive symptoms, with some reporting improvements in mood following magnesium supplementation(Botturi et al., 2020). A randomized controlled trial indicated that magnesium, especially when combined with vitamin B6, significantly reduced depression and anxiety scores in stressed individuals (Noah et al., 2021). In patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) undergoing SSRI treatment, magnesium supplementation demonstrated a notable reduction in depression scores over time(Nazarinasab et al., 2022).
Magnesium and Anxiety
Evidence suggests that magnesium deficiency may exacerbate anxiety disorders, with supplementation improving symptoms in individuals with low magnesium levels(Rukat et al., 2024). While some studies found no significant association between magnesium levels and generalized anxiety disorder, others reported reduced anxiety scores in patients with higher magnesium levels (Botturi et al., 2020).
Despite the promising findings, the relationship between magnesium levels and mental health is complex, and not all studies agree on its efficacy.
